" In a Mind's Eye"
Sandstone is truly a remarkable material. Originally sand dunes swept by the winds into these fanciful forms by the changing winds. Then for millions of years they were buried under inland seas. The weight, minerals, and pressure solidified these dunes into solid rock. Eventually the seas recede leaving these huge "mountains" of sandstone that slowly get sculpted even further by the current day elements. This alcove on the side of a cliff will eventually collapse leaving small sand particles that will be scattered to the winds. For now we can just enjoy the beauty it presents.
