We go through the day, each day, seeing many things. Some stimulate us but most do not as they are lost in our busy lives. With my images I am trying to get you, the viewer, to experience some kind of emotion or feeling through them. Just for a moment I want you to get lost and actually be in the photograph rather then viewing it from an emotional distance.

I realize that this occurs only rarely, however I feel it is worth it....

Each image reflects how I see and view the world that we occupy. I hope you enjoy them!

                                                                 "A Lost World"

A landscape from a time when prehistoric mammals roamed the earth. These massive mammals are now extinct however the landscape over the millions of years has somehow endured. It has changed and is still changing. it's history are in it's hills, shapes and colors.

                                                                      "Moonrise over..."

I was hiking up a boulder strewn wash unto a large mesa top when I encountered this very large and forbidding looking formation. It seems to have a prehistoric animalistic look about it. The title is a little misleading as it was morning and the moon was setting, not rising. All in all a terrific experience.

On a recent trip to Death Valley we visited  what is supposedly the lowest point in North America. The area is called Badwater and lies -282 feet below sea level. Named because the water is extremely salty and early settlers thought the name would be a warning to all.

In a quiet secluded alcove this little flower bed thrives. It seems to have an orchestra of warm colors surrounding and accentuating it.
I am especially attracted to cliff faces that have fractured rock exposing multicolored veins of color. The addition of the small plant is definitely a plus.

                                                                   "Cross-Bedding"

While hiking with friends we happened upon this lonely tree standing next to a series of fossilized sand dunes. Millions of years ago while it was still loose sand the winds created these cross-bedded patterns.

                                                              "River of Gold"

This is neither a river nor is it gold but rather acidic water spewing various minerals from the mouth of a geyser. It's vent started on level ground but over time has built itself up to a high hill. The various minerals thrust up provide the colorful display while killing all in it's path.

 "Merging Fins"

Various types of rock have eroded away on a different timetable leaving these thin stone "fins". The color occurs early in the morning as one rock reflects the blue of the sky and the other the intense red sandstone surrounding this feature. This beauty vanishes as the sun rises. Without being there at that moment it is very difficult to believe that it can be so...

 "The Presence"

This photo is from a series that I call "Mindscapes", as in "only in your dreams".  Originally I was going to title the series "Things that go bump in the night". If I decide to show more images from the series the reason for my not used title will become more obvious. To me the ominous shadow in this photo is what defines it....

 "Timeline"

A tree branch once vibrant and full of life now lies twisted and scarred, but still holds dearly to it's life. Still striving to bring beauty into the world. I see a metaphor representing a timeline in our own lives. Our lives also get twisted and scarred. Each turn, wound and scar is represented in our personal "timeline" as it has been to this branch. We are up against the hard world as it is against the rock. And yet with all the wounds we strive to stand tall and survive. We want to live....

 "Flowing Abstract"

Why is it that certain shapes or textures attract and hold our attention. Why this and not that... After discovering this form I walked around it several times. It had a graceful beauty that just seemed eager to be exposed. It is represented here as I saw it in my "mind" at the time of exposure.

 "Cliff Dwelling"

From around 700 AD to 1300 AD in the American southwest there existed a robust culture of cliff dwelling people that today we call the "Anasazi" or "Ancient Pueblo". Many of their dwellings were constructed high on a cliff face requiring a difficult climb to access them. They left these structures for reasons that are somewhat unclear. Warring tribes, lack of food and drought are the most suspected reasons. Because of the arid climate and their generally being built in a protected part of the cliff face, they still stand intact today....

 "Balancing Act"

This eroded stone formation is high on the top of a wind swept mesa. The stone plates have eroded in a resemblance to the playing card "houses" that we used to love to create. Make no mistake however as this balancing act is quite formidable and looms well over me. It has existed here a long time but it's days are also numbered, some day just to be a heap of rocks.

 "Overcome"

Hot gases resulting in a mineral flow have overwhelmed this once proud tree in Yellowstone National Park. At one time long ago it stood on level ground however as the geyser kept spewing it's flow, the hill was created engulfing the tree. The minerals and sediment create these wonderful colors which are now stand in stark contrast to the tree's skeleton.

 "Datura Blossom"

This beautiful flowering plant goes by several names - Devil's Weed and Moonflower are just a few. Although lovely to view it has a long history of causing delirious states and poisonings in uninformed users. Each blossom opens at night and withers and dies the next day.

 "Graceful to the End"

In a shadow filled canyon the late afternoon sun illuminates this once tall and stately cottonwood tree. It's vibrancy gone it stands beaten and exposed. However even in it's last days it presents us with a quite sense of gracefulness and dignity.
